Mumps is an infectious disease that is caused by avirus. It is targeted by an infected person to a healthy person through close contact. Mumpsstarts with swelling of the salivary glands accompanied by fever, tiredness, headache, andloss of appetite. The symptoms of mumps are usually witnessed a week or two after getting infected with thevirus. The symptoms may or may not show up in every individual. Mumps are not affected by antibiotic since it is viral in nature. Mumps also cause inflammation of some parts of the body. There vaccines available to prevent mumps in infants. MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is given to children to prevent this disease.Adults, when infected,are givenpainkillers to relieve pain. Pine must stay hydrated and stay rested when infected with mumps and avoid being around someone suffering from it.


Though it is a contagious disease and hence one has to take theutmost care with thorough medication, one can also try a few of the home remedies which are much known for the cure. They are much useful if the disease is in theprimary stage and one wants to avoid the side effects of medicines. However, the result of these remedies varies as per the response from the body of each patient; one needs to continue the same for a few days. As they are free from side effects and cost-effective, there is no harm even if they take some time to cure the disease. Here are a few of such remedies.

Sacred fig

Commonly known as peepal had been used since ages to treat mumps effectively. Peepalleaves are heated on flame with clarified butter or ghee and applied over the inflamed part of your body. This reduces inflammation in a few days. This is to be done twice a day and should be left on for at least an hour.


Ginger possesses many wonderful properties out of which antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties are the reason why ginger is extensively used to treat mumps. Ginger can be takenorally, or it can be grounded into a paste and applied over the inflamed area to reduce it. Repeat this method two times a day.

Black peppercorns

Black peppercorn can be grounded in a fine powder, mix it with water and apply it to the affected area to see improvement in a very short span of time.This should be done twice a day to see improvement.

Fenugreek seeds

They are known as an excellent remedy for mumps. It has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that fight mumps and provides relief quickly.This can also be powdered and mixed with water to form a paste. Apply this paste to the affected area and leave it on for a few minutes. Do this twice daily reduce swelling.

Margosa leaves or neem

Margosa leaves being antibacterial and anti-inflammatoryare also used in the treatment of mumps the leaves can be grounded with a tablespoon of turmeric powder and applied over the swollen area.This should be left on for a few hours. Repeat this method twice a day to reduce swelling.
